East Stroudsburg cuts energy, brightens
sports facilities with prismatic lighting



East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania takes its sports program very seriously. The Division II school is recognized not only for its outstanding basketball team, but for its winning swim team.

Recently, university officials decided to upgrade its gymnasium and natatorium facilities by retrofitting the lighting. Saving energy was the pr imary motive for replacing the existing system, which consisted of 1,000- and 400-watt mercury vapor fixtures .

"The former lighting system was somewhat of a dinosaur in terms of energy usage, " said Stuart Goodman, electrical designer for Entech Engineering, Reading, Pennsylvania, who designed the project. "We also wanted to improve the quality of the illumination within these facilities. "

The ceiling in the 4E, 600-square-foot Koehler Field House posed a particular challenge because of its almost cylindrical shape. T he highest point in the ceiling is about 45 feet, sloping to 15 feet at the edges.

According to Goodman, the field house is a multi-purpose facility, used not only for basketball and volleyball competition, but for more sedate activities such as commencement. The baseball team also practices inside the facility, which made a durable lighting fixture essential.

"We considered fixtures with acrylic reflectors from several manufacturers but decided on the Holophane Prismalume Luminaires with borosilicate glass because they are tough.

Once in a while, the luminaires do get hit with a hard ball and they have to be able to withstand
the punch, " Goodman said.

Fixtures installed above the playing floor in the field house have 400 watt super metal halide lamps to provide more lumen output over the courts. On both sides of the arena, above the bleachers, Prismalume units with 250 watt metal lamps are installed. All of the fixtures are enclosed and gasketed.

"By reducing the lamp wattage from 1,000 watt mercury vapor to 400 watt metal halide, and from 400 watt mercury vapor to 250 watt metal halide, energy usage is decreased by about 50 percent, " said Goodman. "The payback on the entire project - including the luminaires, the materials and labor - is about 3.3 years . For the lighting fixtures only, the payback is about a year."

In the field house, the Prismalume fixtures are spaced 14 feet apart in a square pattern. Because the Holophane fixtures replaced the existing units in a one-to-one ratio, they are installed in about the same locations. They are mounted on a two-foot stem, with mounting heights varying from 13 to 43 feet. Footcandle levels are approximately 80 maintained.

One of the benefits of the Prismalume Luminaires is the 20 percent uplight, which really "shows off" the ceiling. The ceiling includes structural steel that was painted white prior to the retrofit.

"The athletic department is really pleased with how bright the space is now, " said Matthew Curran, director of facilities at East Stroudsburg University. "There is a dramatic difference between the former mercury vapor system and the Holophane fixtures. The lighting is much more comfortable."

About 10 percent of the fixtures in the arena have quartz restrike for standby lighting. There are
also emergency lighting fixtures.

In the natatorium, Holophane PrismGlo fixtures with 400 watt metal halide lamps are installed above the edges of pool. Previously, the mercury vapor system was designed so that the fixtures were located directly over the pool. During the retrofit, however, the PrismGlo luminaires, with remote ballasts, were placed on the outside of the pool.

"We placed two 400 watt PrismGlo fixtures side by side so that, basically, we have the effects of a 1,000 watt super metal halide lamp, but with less wattage, " Goodman explained.

"When we were considering lighting fixtures, we could not find any that matched the photometric performance of the Holophane fixtures, particularly for the natatorium. We needed a very wide spread of light to cross the pool and illuminate the area uniformly. "

Besides the 400 watt fixtures installed in the pool area, 250 watt PrismGlo Luminaires are installed above the bleachers.
The PrismGlos provide 40 percent uplight and bounce indirect light to the pool and surrounding area. This reduces reflected glare, facilitates judging, and makes the entire pool area safer. The fixtures in the natatorium are mounted at (number) feet, with footcandle levels at 75.

"The average footcandle level may be a bit lower overall in the natatorium than in the field house. What we wanted to do was punch up light levels at the ends of the pool especially so the officials would have good visibility to determine the finishing order of contestants, " said Goodman.

A total of 249 Prismalume fixtures are installed ill the field house, with 28 PrismGlo units in the natatorium.
"East Stroudsburg University is very pleased with the results, " Goodman concluded. "With the Holophane luminaires, we have the energy savings we were striving to achieve, plus we have a very bright atmosphere without the glare, even at the Sower mounting heights. "
